The Florida Department of Education has instituted a new project called Bright Beginnings. The Bright Beginnings Initiative is designed to help provide a strong foundation in reading and math for Florida's children in VPK through the third grade to:

• Improve rates of learning in reading and math for students, especially for those at risk for future failure.
• Improve communication with and involvement of parents and families.
• Reduce rates of referrals and placement in special education programs while meeting the needs of diverse learners.
• Improve training and professional development to teachers through the consolidation of multiple state initiatives.
